Eight days after announcing that men’s lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany would not return, UVA promoted his top assistant.
Kevin Cassese, 45, served as the team’s offensive coordinator and associate head coach for the past three seasons. He came to UVA after 16 seasons as head coach at Lehigh University.
UVA won national championships in 2019 and 2021 under Tiffany, who had a record of 108-51 in 10 seasons. The Cavaliers won the ACC championship this past season but lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. In 2025, UVA failed to qualify for the NCAA tourney for the first time since 2017.
On May 18, UVA announced that Tiffany would not be retained. At the press conference introducing Cassese, Director of Athletics Carla Williams thanked Tiffany for his “many contributions” but declined to comment on why he was not retained. Cassese called him a friend and mentor.
Tiffany, meanwhile, has sued UVA for breach of contract. In a suit filed June 22 in Albemarle County Circuit Court, he alleges that he signed an offer sheet for a three-year contract extension in April. The suit seeks a minimum of $1.48 million in damages.
