2 people shot at VUU during Homecoming weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Two people were shot Saturday on the campus of Virginia Union University.

Richmond Police responded to the 1500 block of Lombardy Street around 8:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

Officers found an adult male suffering from non-life threatening injures. He was transported to a local hospital.

A second adult male transported himself to a local hospital. He also has non-life threatening injuries.

12 On Your Side was at the scene and could see heavy police activity after the shooting.

It is unclear what let up to the incident.

This is the second shooting this week at VUU, after one man was sent to the hospital with a gunshot wound on Tuesday.

Protests at state Capitol calls for pause on data center growth

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Hundreds of people rallied at the Bell Tower on Capitol Square Saturday, calling for a pause on data center construction and approvals across Virginia.

Organizers said they want new statewide protections for air, water and electricity costs before more data centers are built.

At this rally, protestors and bystanders could hear a new slogan being chanted at the demonstrations: “Hey, hey, ho, ho, data centers have got to go.”

It started in Virginia Beach two weeks ago as part of a statewide campaign to pause data center development.

50 years ago, these Henry County students made history

Harriett Leigh Grogan had completed the seventh grade at Spencer Penn Elementary School in Henry County, excited and somewhat nervous about the prospect of beginning the eighth grade in the fall of 1971 at Drewry Mason High.

Until the day she received mail from the school system.

“You know how you get that letter that tells you who your homeroom teacher is? I got a letter that said, ‘Starting eighth grade, you will be going to G.W. Carver High School.’

“I had no idea what that was. I knew who George Washington Carver was, the scientist, but ‘What school? Where is this?’ My grandfather was like, ‘Are you sure about that? That’s a Black high school.’ I said, ‘Well, I guess I’ll be the only white girl there.'”

A breakup of the ACC could be coming. Virginia Tech’s new president may have to deal with the potential demise of the school’s athletic conference.

When Richard Linton takes office in January as Virginia Tech’s 17th president, one of the many tasks before him will be one that has nothing to do with education or enrollment or research. At some point, he may have to deal with finding a suitable home for the Hokies if the Atlantic Coast Conference disintegrates.

This is not some idle sports speculation. This is now a matter of politics — and, as is the case with almost anything these days involving college sports, money.

Perriello sees a path forward in the 5th District race as voters grapple with economic woes

Tom Perriello bounced through the produce section and down the aisles of a Food Lion grocery store in Keysville around 6 p.m. on a Monday in early October.

He picked up items, looked at the price tags, introduced himself and talked to shoppers and employees — and shot a campaign video before breezing back out of the busy store.

It was the first of two back-to-back stops at grocery stores, in Keysville and then Victoria, and he was about a third of the way through “24 Hours of Tom,” a blitz of events that saw the Democratic candidate campaign around the clock in 24 different localities across the 5th Congressional District.

Voters in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District will see three candidates on their ballot for U.S. representative, including an independent candidate, Cooke Harvey.

The contentious midterm election has seen the historically Republican district drift toward the left. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report recently shifted the race from “solidly Republican” to “leans Republican” amid a barrage of ad spending in support of the Democratic candidate. But Harvey, who launched his campaign on Jan. 1, 2026, aims to give voters an option outside of the two-party political system.

Obituary - Edward Crist Walters

Edward Crist Walters, 88, of Henrico, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2026. He was born to the late Charles and Mary Walters in Cricleville, Ohio. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack Walters.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Jeanne Walters; daughter, Sheryl Kay Hellmuth (George); son, Scott David Walters (Andrea); sister, Carolyn Seitz (Merlyn); brother, Dick Walters (Michelle); grandchildren, Lauren Garcia-Hellmuth (Canyon), Marin Walters, Jessica Hellmuth, and Kayla Walters; great-grandchildren, Tony and Sallie.

This Day in Henrico History: October 23 – Anthrax scare disrupts workplaces and mail operations in Henrico

On October 23, 2001, two facilities in Henrico County were disrupted by suspicious mail during a national wave of anxiety over anthrax attacks. Henrico Police’s official history records the evacuation of employees at an Internal Revenue Service distribution center on Carolina Avenue after a white powder was found in an incoming letter.

The same day, the Richmond Post Office processing and distribution annex near Richmond International Airport was temporarily shut down over a similar concern. These local precautions came amid reports of anthrax-contaminated letters elsewhere in the country, following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Federal government labels RHHA as ‘troubled’ after failing HUD Score

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) has been designated as “troubled” by the federal government after receiving a failing score in its latest evaluation.

According to a new interim Public Housing Assessment System (PHAS) report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, RRHA received an overall score of 58 out of 100, placing it in the troubled category.

The score is based on four major categories: physical conditions, financial performance, management, and capital fund operations:
